Emily’s USGA Major Achievements

Written by Denis Foster
Marriott Courtyard, Rye, Westchester, New York

Emily’s USGA Major Achievement

Dear Barbadian Golf Enthusiasts,

As you are no doubt aware, Emily Odwin has qualified for the USGA Girls’ Championship and the USGA Women’s Amateur Championship 2021.

This achievement is so unique and inspiring that I thought it would be a good idea to put it into perspective.

By way of explanation, players have to compete in sectional events throughout the USA to qualify for these championships. Each championship attracted over 1500 entrants of which 156 qualified for each. Emily won her qualifying event in New Jersey to gain entry in to the USGA Girls Championship with a score of 3 under par and she was runner-up in the USGA Women’s Amateur sectional qualifier in New York with a score of 5 under par. This, of course, was a first for Barbados and the Caribbean and is an amazing achievement.

In both championships the format is the same; namely, the 156 qualifiers play 36 holes of stroke play to determine the top 64 which go through to the match play knockout rounds.

Emily has already competed in the USGA Girls and, with scores of 77 + 77, she failed to make it into the final 64. The winner of this event was Rose Zhang who is ranked #1 by the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

The first round of stroke play starts tomorrow in the USGA Women’s Amateur Championships at Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York. Again, let me put this event into perspective. It is the #1 women’s amateur championship in the world. Here’s why:

  • 23 countries are represented. These are: USA (108), Canada (6), People’s Republic of China (5),

Chinese Taipei (5), Australia (4), Colombia (2), Germany (2), Malaysia (2), Mexico (2), Philippines (2), Scotland (2), Thailand (2), Argentina (1), Austria (1), Barbados (1), England (1), Italy (1), Japan (1), Republic of Korea (1), South Africa (1), Vietnam (1), US Virgin Islands (1).

In the field:

  • Past USGA Women’s Champions 6
  • Curtis Cup USA Team Members 2
  • 10 players in Top 30 in Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking, including #1, #2, #9, #10, #16, #21, #23, #28, #29, #30.
  • 10 amateur players who qualified to play in the US Women’s Open on the LPGA.

Emily’s current Women’s WAGR is 1526. Her best world ranking prior to the Covid pandemic was 998.

Please go to the USGA website and learn more about this event. The link below should take you there.

Emily has achieved what no other Barbadian golfer has done; she has played her way to the highest international level of junior golf and women’s amateur golf. As a result, she is competing against the very best in the most prestigious major amateur women’s championship in the world, the USGA Women’s Amateur Championship 2021. Her tee time tomorrow is 1:24 off tee #1. You can follow her scores using the link below.

Emily Odwin during her practice round

This is such a momentous occasion for our game in Barbados, I thought I would share my enthusiasm with as many of you as possible. Please take a little time from your busy schedules and follow Emily in her quest to make the top 64 over the next two days. And please share the links provided and this correspondence, if you wish, to as many of your golfing friends as you possibly can.

Best wishes,

Denny.

Young Barbadian Golfers Making Strides

Read below the stories of two young golfers from the Barbados Golf Club.

4-Year Old Ashton O’Kola is an Up and Coming Golf Star.

The youngest golfer in the David Marshall Youth Golf Academy is full of potential with a promising golf future ahead. Ashton O’Kola trains at the Barbados Golf Club every week and we can all see how much he loves the game.

This past week, Ashton traveled to Illinois to compete in the 2021 Pepsi Little People’s Golf Championships, representing Barbados well.

A very big Congratulations to him for placing 2nd!

young golfers

Ashton competed in the division 1, age 3-5 category, which comprised of 5 holes totaling 463 yards over 2 days.

His Results:

Playing well on day one, but making a disappointing triple putt on one hole sent his score up. However, he recovered well on day two.

Day 1: Par on hole 1, Bogey on hole 2, Par on hole 3, Triple Bogey on 4, and Bogey on 5. Totaling 25.

Day 2: Par on hole 1, Birdie on hole 2, Par on hole 3, Double Bogey on 4, and Double on 5. Totaling 20.

Ashton has now qualified for the IMG World Junior Championship in San Diego to represent Barbados.

WELL DONE!

Emily Odwin Continues to Rise in the Golf World

Local golf star Emily has become the first Barbadian female to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships.

She made the cut after placing 2nd in the New York state sectional qualifying event, which was played at the Sunningdale Country Club. Her five under par score of 66 was one shot behind the USA winner.

Odwin agreed that the difficult Sunningdale course, which measures a 6,150 par 71, was really tough to play but she tried to hit as many fairways as possible. The 17-year old golfer hit 17 greens in regulation and made six birdies.

Odwin will continue to take on the best female amateur golfers from around the world in the next few months. She will compete in the 72nd U.S. Girls’ Junior Championships in July, followed by the 121st U.S. Women’s Amateur Championships in august.

Congratulations to both of these young golfers!

Barbados Junior Golf Championships 2020

Barbados Junior International Golf Championships 2020

December 11th – 13th

Barbados Junior

The Barbados Junior International Golf Championships 2020 got underway at Barbados Golf Club this past weekend.

The 54-hole event attracted a field of seventeen junior golfers, 14 boys and 3 girls ranging between the ages of 10 to 19 years old. The BJIGC was originally scheduled to be hosted by Barbados Golf Club in April but had to be postponed due the Covid-19 pandemic.

As a result of the pandemic the national junior championship did not attracted any entries from overseas. Nevertheless, the field, although small, was very strong. National players Iz Hustler, Xzavier Wiggins and Emily Odwin (who represented Barbados in the Pan Am Games in Peru in 2019) have entered in the 16-19 age category.

Barbados Junior

Day 1:

Xzavier was the only player to break par on the first day, carding a one under par, 71.

Emily Odwin was close behind his heels with an even par score of 72. Iz Hustler had a disappointing day, finishing on 81, 10 shots behind the first day leader, Wiggins. Nicholas Phillips, who is emerging as a very fine player, scored 80 to finish in third position.

In the 13-15 age category, the competition is extremely close. There are four players within 5 shots of each other. Gordon Chow closed with an 88 to take a slim lead over Paul McConnie and Dominic Toppin who both completed their 18 holes in 90. Chris Jackman is not far behind the leaders with a score of 93.

Perhaps the outstanding round of the day came from 12 years old Lenny Jansen. Lenny scored 41 from the Red Tees to take the lead in the boy and girls 10-12 age category. Joshua Sambrano finished on 51, while Josh Kent played the 9 holes in 52.

Day 2:

The leaders in the 16-19 age category ended the second day on 146, two over par. Emily Odwin, who was one stroke behind the overnight leader, Xzavier Wiggins, pulled level with a two over par 74 to Wiggins’ 75. As expected, Iz Hustler improved from his first day score of 81 with a steady 73 to move into third place. Nicholas Phillips again showed how much he is improving by recording a score of 76 to back up his 80 on day 1. Sixteen year old William Jacobsen, hailing from California, but resident on the island, stormed back from an 84 yesterday. He was 10 strokes better, scoring an excellent 74.

In the 13-15 age category the competition remained extremely tight. Gordon Chow, after a shaky start, pulled his game together to maintain a two stroke lead over Paul McConnie. One stroke further back in third was Dominic Toppin, who is showing that his hard work on the practice range is beginning to pay off on the course.

Once again, Lenny Jansen proved that he was one of the most improved junior golfers on the island. Playing from the Red Tees for the first time, he once again played the front nine in 41, 5 over par – an absolutely brilliant performance. In fact, this age group had been really impressive with the three competitors turning in sterling performances. Joshua Sambrano, only 10 years old, scored 48 today and Josh Kent finished on 51. This is the first time that these young golfers have played over the Red Tees distance.

Day 3:

Barbados JuniorEmily Odwin’s last day score of 73 was good enough to clinch the top honors of this year’s event.

Odwin completed her round with two birdies to pass her nearest rival, Xzavier Wiggins, who finished on 76. Odwin was three over par for the tournament with scores of 72, 74 and 73. In third place was Iz Hustler who carded two 73’s on the second and third rounds but couldn’t make up enough ground to threaten the winner after an uncharacteristic first round of 81.

Gordon Chow, who was recognized as the “Most Improved Junior Golfer in 2020”, easily won the 13-15 age category.

Barbados Junior

He played consistently well to record an 84 on day 3 to extend his lead over Paul McConnie who finished on 85. Dominic Toppin, voted “The Most Enthusiastic Junior Golfer 2020” earned thirdplace.

One of the stars of the BJIGC was Lenny Jansen who won the 10-12 age category. This age category played from the Red Tees for the first time and Lenny was spectacular over the nine holes every day, scoring 41, 41 and 40 to win his age category in grand style. Joshua Sambrano edged out Josh Kent by two stokes to take second place.Barbados Junior

Six juniors earned annual membership scholarships to the Barbados Golf Club for 2021. These scholarships are sponsored by the Barbados Golf Association and the Barbados Golf Club. The players who were awarded scholarships were Lenny Jansen, Brianna Prescod, Gordon Chow, Dominic Toppin, Xzavier Wiggins and Emily Odwin.

Congratulations, and well done to all.
